History

Kunst en Licht en Glas began twenty-five years ago, collecting art deco lamps in Vienna. We began collecting antique lamps, which were designs inspired by the Wiener Werkstätte by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser. The Viennese Jugendstil / Art Nouveau had a unique place in contemporary art movements at the time.
Over the years, we sold many antique lamps from our collection, and received requests to produce more in line with these designs. You can still see these influences at the root of our contemporary designs.

Interview with Joze ten Have

How and when did you start making custom lamps?

Kunst en Licht was founded in 1994 by Jozé ten Have when customers requested Viennese Art Deco lighting designs.

"I received more and more demand from individuals and companies for newly designed lighting in different styles, like Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Years 50 and later, and also modern lighting designed with new technologies like LED. The advantage of custom-making lamps is that I can tailor designs to suit each interior, as well as the client’s budget.”

Did you study?

I am an artist and studied at the St. Joost academy in Breda.

Describe the value of your light sculptures.

As a visual artist, you use your imagination, which, combined with hand-craftsmanship, helps you create beautiful light objects.

How free are you when you work on assignment?

Each project is the fusion between the artistry and ambience of the light object itself as well as the practical. The object should also provide the kind of light the customer has in mind.

What do you consider a good lamp?

A good lamp is one that is made with skill and at the same time is a realization of the artist’s expression.

What is your favorite lamp and why?

We made a giant chandelier for the Albanian artist Adrian Paci twice, which was 4 meters in diameter and 6 meters high. It was exhibited in the Netherlands and in Sydney, Australia. It was a great art project. The lamp hung very low, beneath the brick generators. The rest of the room was dark, dusty and dirty. Together, it was a concoction of dust, noise, and sparkling light. The result was intended to portray the differences between rich and poor. The work impacted all the senses.

What are your other favorite lamps and why?

The aqua creations’ materials are absolutely beautiful. Female, organic and magical.

Can you tell us something about the bespoke materials you've worked with?

We work with different materials, such as brass, copper, steel, stainless steel and glass. We work with a number of glass vendors including the glass blowers in Leerdam. The glass usually leaves us as small designs, and we have the ability to make replicas. We have also blown glass for an original Gispen lamp. This is costly and time consuming, but sometimes an art deco model is worth it. In our studio, we can fuse glass using heat, which gives us many opportunities to work with glass pieces and glass plates in different designs. Now, you can set LED lamps close to glass, and that gives you plenty of room to be creative. With laminated glass panels, lit behind by 1 watts power LEDs ... the line fades between craft and art.

What do you understand about craftsmanship?

We have created an "Amsterdam School" lamp. The original design is by architect Siebe Jan Bouma, from around 1920. From this lamp, we made a smaller copy from brass; the lamp is 370 cm long. This project is a good example of craftsmanship. Various rings and chains were individually soldered. Every inch of this lamp was made especially. We have also made LED wall lamps with brass ornaments as stylish wall lights.

What is your goal or your dream as a designer?

I would like to design and make both huge and small light sculptures, and have an unlimited amount of time for them.
